Teen Health/School Based Nursing provides a variety of primary care services at our Teen Health Center to meet the urgent and preventive care needs of the students in our schools and community.

Sick Visits:

Teen Health Medical Center- Port Huron offers sick visit appointments. If you can't get in to see your primary doctor, staff can diagnosis and treat common illnesses, helping them get well quickly, and return to school.

Rapid Testing:

Rapid testing for viral illnesses allows a student who feels unwell at school jump start their care and return home if necessary to start recovering. Rapid testing available within the clinic include:

  • Influenza
  • COVID
  • Mono
  • Strep

Physicals & Sports Physicals:

Annual physicals are recommended for children and teens. This is an opportunity to make sure your child is healthy, and teach and counsel them how to prevent illness including nutrition, safety, and development. Children participating in school sports require a physical for participation every year. Physicals within the clinic include:

  • Health Assessment
  • Height, Weight, Vitals
  • Vision & Hearing Screening
  • Cholesterol & Hemoglobin Screening
  • Immunizations
  • Urinalysis

Immunizations:

Protection from preventable diseases and illnesses is important to the overall health of your child as well as the community as a whole. Immunizations are the best way to protect the community from illnesses. Nurses can administer (with parental consent) vaccines to both students and staff making it a convenient way to stay up to date, and reduce class absences.

STI & Pregnancy Testing: 

Our goal is to ensure your teen has access to all aspects of healthcare. Michigan state law allows minors to have access to some medical services without parent or guardian permission including:

  • Pregnancy testing
  • Screening, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Primary & Preventive Health Care: 

Our team will support you in building a healthier you. No matter what your health needs are, having a team support you will keep you on the path to meeting them. Services include:

  • Health assessments and risk reduction
  • Treatment for illness, including prescriptions
  • Treatment for minor injuries
  • Basic laboratory services and tests
  • Referral for special care services
  • Education and resources to help better understand the health care system

Heath Education: 

Our mission is to provide expertise in health and promote the academic success of the nation's children and youth by providing leadership and advocacy. Teen Health/School based clinics can provide individual, group, & classroom education.

Counseling Services

Teen Health/School Based Counseling offer a variety of services to meet the mental health needs of children and teens including depression and anxiety, stress management and support for grief and anger. Referral services are utilized for those who may benefit from needing psychiatric services (medication).

Assessment:

Social workers offer screening and assessment for a variety of mental health conditions affecting children and adolescents. Comprehensive screening and assessments are available to individuals at each of our Health Centers and take place prior to all therapy services. Services include, but are not limited to:

  • Anxiety & Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Trauma Grief
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Screening for substance abuse
  • Adjustment disorders

Individual Therapy: 

Individual therapy sessions are designed to address a variety of mental health needs and are based on the individualized treatment plan. The duration and frequency of sessions are determined by the client’s progress and the provider’s professional judgement. Social workers offer a variety of therapeutic interventions including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Interpersonal therapy
  • Supportive therapy
  • Motivational interviewing & more

Group Therapy:

Social workers also offer group therapy in order to treat multiple clients at once who have the same condition. These conditions include, but are not limited to, depression anxiety and anger management. Group therapy often utilizes principles from cognitive behavioral therapy to address the specific topic of the group. Groups are offered periodically during the school year and often cater to site specific needs.
