Cover It- You Matter
Preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV is a key part of health. Healthy practices include:
- Discussing sexual health with partners and healthcare providers helps.
- Abstinence is the 100% way to prevent.
- Testing yearly for anyone who is sexually active.
- Feeling sick or signs of an STI may not present itself.
Condom Use and Safety:
Using barrier protection correctly is important for it to work:
- Only latex or plastic (polyurethane/polyisoprene) condoms protect against STIs. Lambskin condoms do not prevent the spread of infections.
- Keep condoms in a cool, dry place and always check the expiration date.
- Only use water-based or silicone-based lubricants. Oil-based products (like lotion or Vaseline) can cause the condom to break.
- Leave a small space at the tip of the condom when putting it on.
- Hold the condom at the base and remove it immediately after use.
- Use a new condom every time. Condoms are not designed to be reused.
