18 year old injured in one car crash
(Fort Gratiot Township) An 18 year old Fort Gratiot Township woman was injured in a one car crash yesterday morning.
According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, Rachel Kolar was heading eastbound on North River Road near Parker Road at about 8:45, when she lost control of her 2003 Ford Taurus on the snow covered road. The vehicle went across three lanes of traffic and went sideways into a 4” diameter steel mailbox post that was filled with cement. The vehicle’s passenger side door struck the post, causing the vehicle to flip onto its top. Most mailbox posts would snap, but this post did not, because of the reinforcement. “We are asking that anyone with this type of mailbox post replace it,” said Sheriff Tim Donnellon. “The severity of this crash could have been lessened if the post was made of wood, or some other material that would break away with a severe impact.”
St. Clair County Road Managing Director Kirk Weston said there is no state law against having such a post in place, but there is a county policy that if one is discovered in the county right of way, it will be removed.
Kolar was transported by Tri-Hospital to Port Huron Hospital, then taken to St. John’s Hospital in Detroit with undetermined injuries.
Michigan State Police and Fort Gratiot Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene of the crash.
