Low Water Levels Plague Boaters Current levels below average December 1, 1999
The latest statistics released by the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers indicates that the current water levels in the lower Great Lakes are averaging 6 inches below the all time average. By mid-December the average water depth will be about one foot above chart datum. Engineers have stated that the we have experienced the most rapid drop ( 2 ft.+ ) within a two year period (1997-1999) since record keeping began. Many of the shallower bays in the Lake St. Clair area are now not navigable for pleasure craft. Many larger craft are marooned in their canals and unable to be dry docked for the winter. Furthermore, if we do not receive a significant amount of rain or snowfall this winter season, the levels will go down even further. All boaters still operating in this late season are encouraged to check their charts to avoid groundings or striking submerged objects.
