POSITION SUMMARY:

This position performs a variety of professional librarian duties including, but not limited to, cataloguing, reference, reader’s advisory and collection development. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Perform professional cataloging and classification for print and non-print material using MARC protocol, original descriptive cataloging and subject analysis.

·         Import records and invoices from vendors into ILS.

·         Assist with maintaining the Teleworks patron notification program for pre-notifications of classes, materials on hold and overdue material.

·         Telephone troubleshooting of software problems.

·         Assist with the administration of resources for the implementation and improvement of technology services and library automation.

·         Use the Teleworks patron notification program for pre-notification of classes, materials on hold and overdue material.

·         Work with inventory process system-wide.

·         Provide quality control of processed new materials.

·         Respond to eBook customer support issues.

·         Assist patrons at public service desks in using library materials and services.

·         Assist patrons with e-readers and eBook downloading.

·         Elicit and interpret information requests in person and by telephone

·         Instruct and assist patrons in using the online catalog and in making effective use of the Library’s collections.

·         Direct patrons to sources of information.

·         Assist patrons in research.

·         Provide reader’s advisory services.

·         Develop and maintain the general collection for assigned classification areas.

·         Train staff as needed in relevant areas.

·         Work at public service stations as needed. 

·         Participate in team meetings, training and other professional development opportunities.

·         Check and respond to email regularly.

·         Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Work is performed under the supervision of the Innovation, Technology, and Collections Coordinator and general guidance of the Technical Services Department Lead.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May coordinate daily activities of Main Library clerical staff and pages assigned to area and monitor associated daily work.

 

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, EDUCATION:

·         Master’s Degree in information or library science from an American Library Association accredited school.

·         High level of commitment to public service.

·         Knowledgeable of the principles and practices of professional librarianship.

·         A familiarity with the Horizon or similar public access systems.

·         Knowledge of standard library reference tools and sources of information.

·         Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.  

·         Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.  

·         Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly;  communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

·         Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required.  Proficiency may be tested.

  • Must possess a St. Clair County Library Systems- Library Card prior to employment and maintain throughout employment.
