Responsible for maintaining a digital/video record of court proceedings, an automated courtroom log and managing exhibits.  Operates and assists judges/attorneys in operation of automated courtroom evidence and presentation documentation systems, prepares and distributes video/digital copies of court proceeding under the direction of the court and operates interactive video equipment between courtroom and remote locations as required.  Responds to inquiries regarding scheduled courtroom proceedings and assists with other courtroom duties as required.


·         Records and maintains digital/video record of court proceedings and automated courtroom log.

·         Acts as a liaison on behalf of a District Court Judge with Court staff, the legal profession, law enforcement agencies/officers, Probation Department and the public.

·         Assists with docket related matters on all cases.

·         Operates and assists judges/attorneys in the operation of automated courtroom evidence and presentation documentation systems.

·         Ensures all files and relevant materials are available for each case scheduled for hearing or trial; ensures proper signatures are attained and documents are distributed to the proper offices and/or persons.

·         Updates case information in the case management system. 

·         Provides orientation to the Court Clerk regarding general court procedures. 

·         Works in conjunction with the Court Clerk in order to maintain a proper courtroom.

·         As needed, communicates Judge’s requirements and standards to court personnel.

·         Assists during court proceedings by marking, logging and retaining exhibits as mandated by Court Rules. 

·         May call the courtroom to order and swear in witnesses.

·         May process default landlord/tenant judgments as needed.

·         As requested by the Judge, replays all testimony of court proceedings or other applicable recordings.

·         Prepares and distributes video/digital copies of court proceedings under the direction of the court.

·         Operates interactive video equipment between courtroom and jail or prison system.

·         Answers telephone and other inquiries requiring knowledge of court rules and regulation.

·         Composes, prepares and distributes correspondence, records, legal documents, notices, forms and reports as needed; proofreads prepared materials for accuracy, completeness and compliance with Court procedures, policies, practices and Michigan Court Rules.

·         Performs moderately complex data entry in the office and/or courtroom environment.

·         Handles juror communications, including assembly and roll call of jurors and supplying and/or coordinating presentation of juror handbook.

·         Maintains jury room presentation including stocking coffee, tea, hot chocolate, condiments, etc.

·         Performs executive clerical assistance to assigned Judge.

·         Assists or substitutes for other 72nd District Court staff as needed.

·         Other duties as assigned.



Operates under direct day-to-day supervision of assigned Judge, however, as a member of a clerical office union, this employee is supervised by the Court Administrator as concerns to all personnel matters.




·         Graduation from an accredited high school supplemented by technical training in court recording, word processing and related subjects required.

·         Associates degree in Business or Public Administration preferred. 

·         Three years of experience in performing legal stenographic, court recording or closely related work experience preferred. 

·         An equivalent combination of relevant professional work experience supplemented by college coursework and/or certification in court recording may substitute for degree requirement. 

·         Considerable knowledge of courtroom and formal hearing procedures.

·         Ability to read and interpret legal documents and apply statutes and rules of court.

Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.    

·         Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.                       

·         Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly;  communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.




·         Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.                

·         Ability to read, write & communicate in English; follow written and verbal instruction and understand basic mathematics and figure checking.              

·         Ability to interpret and apply procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, manuals to complete tasks accurately and on schedule.                                     

·         Ability to learn from directions, observations, and mistakes; and apply procedures using good judgment.                                                                      

·         Ability to use discretion and maintain sensitive and confidential information.     

·         Ability to work independently or part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others such as County officials, employees, vendors and the general public.

·         Ability to work under supervision, receiving instructions/feedback, coaching/counseling and/or action/discipline.                                             

·         Adaptability to change in the work environment, managing competing demands and ability to deal with frequent changes, delays or unexpected events.

·         Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required.  Proficiency may be tested.

  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license throughout employment in this position.

·         The employee must successfully complete an annual criminal background check in order to obtain and maintain LEIN certification throughout employment in this position.

·         Must actively pursue certification as a Certified Electronics Operator within 18 months of appointment and maintain throughout employment.
