St. Clair County Work Experience Program

St. Clair County is now offering a Student Work Experience Program. The goal of the program is to expose college students to the inner workings of municipal government and provide them with the opportunity to obtain practical on-the-job work experience while receiving college credit.

A work experience intern is as a college student whose objective is the completion of an approved internship program in exchange for educational credit. An intern is hired for a stipulated number of hours in a work activity related to his or her field of study.

  • Work experience interns shall be unpaid. Students receiving any type of financial aid that may be jeopardized by their acceptance of a paid position will avoid those problems through the work experience program.
  • Flexible hours – the program typically lasts 10-12 weeks dependent upon the institution’s academic calendar (one semester/quarter). The student intern will be employed only for the duration of the period necessary to satisfy the course requirements. Specific hours of work will be determined by the department up to the maximum number of hours allowed by the university.

Candidate Eligibility:

  • The program is open to college upperclassmen (juniors/seniors) enrolled in a degree program and registered for courses.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 48 credit hours and at least 50 percent of their major requirements with a 2.5 GPA to qualify.
  • The student must have taken relevant course work specific to the setting and position and should consult their faculty advisor for any prerequisite courses necessary.
  • Students must be eligible and registered with their specific institution for an internship, and must provide official documentation upon acceptance into the program.

Steps in the Work Experience Program Process:
The student should first contact their academic institution to verify that their University participates in Work Experience/Internship Programs.

Once verified by the University, the student should submit a letter of interest indicating their field of study, eligibility verification from the university, resume, transcripts and availability calendar (days/times) to:
