Tax Certification FAQ's

Where do I get a deed certified?

A deed can be mailed or delivered to the Register of Deeds for recording and the Deeds office will attempt to obtain the certification from the Treasurer on behalf of the Grantor.

Can I bring my deed in to be certified?

Yes, hours of over-the-counter certification are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, but due to limited staffing our office reserves the right to refuse over-the-counter certification requests.

What is required to obtain a Tax Certification?

The Treasurer’s office requires valid parcel identification number(s) for all legal descriptions that are being certified. Deeds that do not have valid parcel identification number(s) will not be certified.

Note that the Treasurer reserves the right to reject a deed for the following reasons, as well as those not specified here:

  • Parcel identification number(s) was not provided
  • Legal description provided does not match tax description
  • Error in legal description
  • Taxes are owing
Will I be notified if a Deed is rejected?

Yes, if the Treasurer’s Office is unable to certify a deed, a letter stating the exact reasoning is returned to Register of Deeds or the Grantor.

Who do I contact?

If the Deed was not certified, you can contact our main Treasurer line at 810-989-6915.

Which documents require certification or transfer tax from the Treasurer?

Most instruments transferring title in real estate are serviced by the County Treasurer for revenue stamps of certification of property taxes paid prior to recording the instruments at the County Register of Deeds. See Public Act MCL 211.135 for additional information.
