The National Flood Insurance Program is an insurance program offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for homeowners in areas that may experience flood damage as a result of heavy rains, ice jams, or other natural occurrences.
The insurance can be obtained through an insurance agent that provides your homeowner’s policy. Separate policies are needed for protection against flood damage. Contact your insurance agent for more information on this program.
For more information on the specific flood zone designation that your home may be located in, you may call your local community or the Metropolitan Planning Commission. The Metropolitan Planning Commission maintains flood zone and flood insurance rate maps for the county. You can call our office, leave a message, or stop in to view the maps. Maps are free to view and a nominal fee is charged for copies. Most maps cannot be faxed or e-mailed to you because of the nature of these federal maps. Be prepared to provide an address for your property or be able to describe the location of your property.
For more information about these floodplain maps contact the Metropolitan Planning Commission offices at (810) 989-6950 Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our offices are located on the second floor of the County Administration Building in downtown Port Huron. If you plan to stop by the office we ask that you call ahead to make sure that a staff member will be available to help you.
