Geographic Information System (GIS) Discussion Group
The Metropolitan Planning Commission sponsors a Geographic Information System (GIS)
Discussion Group that meets approximately every other month. The purpose of the
GIS Discussion Group is to provide an informal opportunity for GIS users within
the county to get together and talk about ongoing projects, GIS applications, new
technology, system planning, funding, and so on.
Attendance is open to everyone including the general public. Most who attend these
meetings either represent local communities or various county departments or agencies.
Often GIS professionals from the private sector attend, representatives from SEMCOG
(a council of government leaders in the southeast region of Michigan who conduct
regional planning studies), and every once in a while personnel from the State of
Michigan Information Center (charged with coordinating GIS activities and data within
state government).
Meetings generally consist of an opportunity for all who are present to update others
on GIS projects that they are either planning or that are underway. We also try
and have a different focus for the meeting bringing in speakers who educate, advise,
or simply inform those who are present.
This is a great opportunity for those interested in GIS to network and exchange
ideas in a very informal setting.
Below you will find a number of PDF files that contain summaries of past GIS Discussion
Group meetings.
