Census Data

The St. Clair County Metropolitan Planning Commission and the St. Clair County Library main branch are local places where the public can view reports, request printouts of tabulations, or otherwise obtain assistance in accessing, understanding and using Census 2000 information (as well as some historical census data).

In April 2000 every household in the United States received a Census questionnaire. As a measure of cooperation by the public, in St. Clair County 75% of all housing units (including vacant units) returned a questionnaire within 30 days; this positive response makes it easier for census staff to complete field operations and follow-up.

A summary of Census 2000 results is compared in tables below with the 1990 Census.

GROWTH IN ST. CLAIR COUNTY SWINGS IN FAVOR OF TOWNSHIPS: Cities and Villages Continue to Experience Lower Rates of Growth

The 2000 census confirms what many county residents suspected - that growth in the townships of the county has outpaced growth in the county's cities and villages. In 1970 close to five of every ten county residents lived in a townships, just under half of the county's total population. In 2000 that balance shifted and now just under four of every ten residents lives in a city or village. If current trends continue, by 2020 it is expected that nearly seventy percent of all county residents will live in the townships.
