Title: LEAD BAILIFF
Department: Court Security

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Coordinates activities of Bailiffs assigned to provide security and related services to the St. Clair County Courts for all judges, magistrates and referees at the Courthouse and Marine City Courts. Prepares work schedules and coordinates assignments under the direction of the Court Administrator. Issues written and oral instructions to bailiff employees of the 72nd District Court. Assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness and conformance to policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining order in the courtroom and arranging for the security and comfort of jurors. Prepares and posts daily court schedules, calls court to order, summon and swear jurors. Adjusts errors and complaints. Performs or assists subordinates in performing duties. May transport prisoners to and from county jail and execute warrants, bench warrants and produce warranted people to the courts.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Reports to Court Administrator. Under the direction of the Court Administrator coordinates and schedules daily assignments and security staffing for each court location. Handles customer complaints within the scope of established court policies. Carries out coordination responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Knowledge of methods and techniques for maintaining proper order in the courtroom.
Ability to remain alert at all times and to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Good Physical condition.
Prior law enforcement or law enforcement related experience preferred but not required.
Ability to operate standard office equipment including a computer, fax, copier, etc.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate incident records, correspondence, reports and tabulations.
Ability to work with and maintain current knowledge of the District Court software program.
Familiarity with legal terminology and court procedures.
Ability to get along with the public and maintain working relationships with criminal justice officials.
Good judgment, tact and courtesy.
Ability to deal with and maintain confidentiality in an appropriate manner consistent with court standards.
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Certified police officer.
Associates degree (AA) or equivalent from two year college business/ public administration or equivalent; and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Makes work assignments and advises and assists staff with more difficult or unusual problems in the absence of the Court Administrator.
Review emergency and security policies and procedures of court to determine efficiency and make necessary recommendations and improvements.
Regularly confers with judges, law enforcement representatives, juvenile detention officials and other building tenants regarding security needs and practices.
Compile information and/or statistical data, compose and prepare correspondence, records and reports.
Perform related work as required.
