Title: Bailiff

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Serves as Bailiff assigned to provide security and related services to the St. Clair County Courts for judges, magistrates, and referees at the Port Huron and Marine City Courthouses.  Responsible for maintaining order in court facilities under the direction of judges, judicial officers, or designees.  May also provide security and related services to the St. Clair County Courts for all persons employed by or having business within the Court Buildings.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under the supervision of the Court Security Coordinator.

None.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals. 

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Knowledge of methods and techniques for maintaining proper order in the courtroom. 

Ability to remain alert at all times and to react quickly and calmly in emergencies. 

Good physical condition, which shall mean the ability to apprehend, subdue and control individuals who require physical intervention.

Ability to operate standard office equipment including computer, fax, and copier in order to keep simple records. 

Ability to prepare and maintain accurate incident records, correspondence, reports and tabulations. 

Ability to work with and maintain current knowledge of the court software program. 

Familiarity with legal terminology and court procedures. 

Ability to get along with the public and maintain working relationships with criminal justice officials.

Demonstrate good judgment, tact and courtesy. 

Ability to deal with and maintain confidentiality in an appropriate manner consistent with court standards.

AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Associates degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college with a major in criminal justice with five years of police related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certified police officer with prior law enforcement experience preferred. 

The qualified candidate must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license during employment in the position.

Requires experience in successfully dealing with the public in a wide variety of situations. 

Demonstrate familiarity and proficiency with issued weapons and equipment.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)

Maintain order in the courtroom and arrange for comfort and security of jurors and witnesses. 

Prepares and posts daily court schedules, and calls court to order.

Assist in preparations for court sessions.

Maintain and submit juror records of attendance as necessary. 

May at the direction of the judge, execute warrants and produce warranted people to the courts.

May from time to time assist by filling in for other court security staff. 

Maintain current and up to date knowledge of all court equipment utilized in the performance of the weapons screening program.

Ability to respond and resolve any security related issues within the court buildings.

Assists law enforcement officers and court officials in emergencies by following established procedures for the evacuation of personnel from the building, lock down of building, conducting searches, etc.

Maintain issued equipment.

Perform related work as required.
