GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provide countywide enforcement of all state statutes and county ordinances as relates to dogs. Pick up and care for stray dogs. Euthanize animals. Related work as required. |
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works is performed under the supervision of the Animal Control Officer II (Sergeant) or Director. |

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ability to use discretion, good judgment, understands and carries out oral and written instructions.
The ability to communicate effectively with other employees of the department.
Strong interest in animals and the willingness to develop an understanding of animal care through formal training or otherwise as provided.
Knowledge of the laws, regulations and ordinances as relates to animals control.
Good knowledge of animal diseases and ability to recognize symptoms of illness.
The ability to maintain records and prepare accurate reports.
Exhibits skill in establishing and maintaining harmonious relationships with animal owners, officials and the general public.
Good moral character and in good physical condition.
Have and maintain reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations within the County.
Ability to obtain Certification as an animal control officer and euthanasia technician. Certifications required to be completed within first year of employment.

AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma (or equivalent) is required. An Associate’s degree in criminal justice or a certified police officer highly preferred.
Must have and maintain a valid operator driver license.
Certified Animal Control Officer (100 hours of instruction as prescribed by the Department of Agriculture) and/or Certified Euthanasia Technician (8 hours of training by a certified Veterinarian) preferred.
Minimum two (2) years responsible experience in an animal care facility or as a police officer required. Two (2) years education in veterinary or criminal justice will substitute for the required experience.
Skill in the operation of computers and software programs is required; including but not limited to: Microsoft office. |
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Respond to calls from the public regarding animal problems.
Patrol the county watching for stray, lost dogs and other animals.
Issue citations for violations of state statues and county ordinances.
Investigate animal cruelty and must be able to prepare criminal prosecution report.
Investigate animal bites to determine whether the animal has rabies.
Maintain records and prepare reports as required, including but not limited to charge and search warrants.
Assist in the maintenance of the animal shelter.
Euthanize animals as needed.
Possible assignment to perform the duties as Adoption, Safety, and Education Officer.
May be called out after hours for an animal emergency situation.
Perform related work as required. |
