Title: Court Security Coordinator
Department: Court Security
Wage Range: $40,507   View compensation structure
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Under direction of the Circuit Court Administrator, coordinates the development and implementation of court facility security systems and policies for multiple Court locations.  Responsible to oversee the weapons screening of all persons and property entering the Court Buildings.  Oversee facility security personnel and coordinates training necessary to provide security in St. Clair County Court facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reports to the Circuit Court Administrator.  Under the direction of the Circuit Court Administrator, carries out coordination responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Directly supervises subordinate facility security staff (both in-court bailiffs and security screening personnel).  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Court’s policies, collective bargaining agreements and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and coordinating training of employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance.  The Court Security Coordinator recommends or administers appropriate discipline contingent upon the circumstances and is vested with authority to resolve employee grievance, address complaints and resolve problems.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, judges and law enforcement representatives.

Knowledge of court rules and statutes related to courtroom procedure and security.

Knowledge of methods and techniques for maintaining proper order in the courtroom. 

Ability to remain alert at all times and to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Good physical condition, which shall mean the ability to apprehend, subdue and control individuals who require physical intervention.

Familiarity with legal procedures and terminology.

Ability to analyze, monitor and develop and implement security policy changes under the direction of the Circuit Court Administrator.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to operate standard office equipment including; computer, fax, copier, etc.

Ability to work with and maintain current knowledge of the Court software programs.

Ability to get along with the public and maintain working relationships with criminal justice officials.

Demonstrate good judgment, tact and courtesy. 

Ability to deal with and maintain confidentiality in an appropriate manner consistent with court standards.

AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor degree (BA) in business/public administration or equivalent from an accredited institution and five or more years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certified police officer with prior law enforcement experience preferred. 

The qualified candidate must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license during employment in the position.

Requires experience in successfully dealing with the public in a wide variety of situations. 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)

Responsible for recruiting and hiring staff, coordinating the training, reviewing and evaluating the performance of staff, recommending or administering disciplinary action as appropriate and ensuring the consistent application of personnel policies.

Schedules court security staff and approves work assignments, and advises and assists staff with more difficult or unusual problems.

Review security needs of court and make necessary recommendations for improvements in policy and procedure.

Implement approved policies and procedures.

Regularly confers with judges, staff of other courts, law enforcement representatives and the general public regarding court activities and court security issues.

Performs and/or assists subordinates in performing security duties in high-risk situations.

Oversee court facility security devices such as x-ray machines, hand held and walk-through devices.

Monitor court security cameras.

Provide annual weapons training and certifications.

Assists law enforcement officers and court officials in emergencies by following established procedures for the evacuation of personnel from the building, lock down of building, conducting searches, etc.
