GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
A Child Care Worker is responsible to perform any and all direct and ancillary duties necessary to insure that all residents are properly supervised and cared for and that proper discipline is maintained in the facility. He or she is responsible for effecting all policies, programs and procedures established by the Superintendent and the Family Court Judge. |
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Although a Child Care Worker (floater or stand-by) receives leadership and minor supervision from full time child care workers, he or she is directly responsible to the Shift Supervisor and is required to follow and implement his/her instructions regarding all aspects of work. |
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
A Child Care Worker must be capable of, and is required to, assume total supervision of residents when the Shift Supervisor is absent. However, it must be noted that it is very rare for a part-time employee to ever be in a supervisory position in this institution. |
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Understanding of and desire to work with adolescent youth who have exhibited delinquent behavior.
Personal traits necessary to gain respect, confidence and cooperation of incarcerated youth in order to enhance youth supervisory and rule enforcement duties and permit effective counseling.
Physical strength and agility necessary for engaging in recreation activities and restraining or assisting in the restraint of physically defiant and unruly residents.
This employee will be required to have strong physical, visual, mental and auditory capabilities to adequately care for the well being of youth residents.
Will be required to be of physical ability to walk and stand over a long period of time, as well as physically restrain aggressive adolescent male and female youth as necessary.
Must be able to pull weights 75 lbs to 200 lbs. when restraining adolescents.
Must have the physical capacity to lift pull and hold various weights (21 to 50 lbs.) for various lengths of time as needed on a daily basis.
Must be capable of using standard voice telephone systems and possess the manual dexterity to operate computers and other office equipment.
Requires room/facility searches which requires bending, squatting and stretching for various lengths of time. |
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
At the time of appointment, a Child Care Worker shall have completed 30 semester hours of college or equivalent quarter hours. It is preferred that a Child Care Worker have prior experience in working with adolescent youth. The qualifications listed above are minimums. They are not absolutes, but general guidelines. |
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Supervises residents of his or her own sex in wake-up, bedtime, showers, meals, clothing and bedding issues, and wing and other cleaning.
Provides general activity supervision to all residents, including supervision of recreational activities.
Insures that all facility policies, programs and procedures are affected and that proper discipline is maintained within the facility.
Completes all established procedures when admitting or releasing a resident of the same sex.
Provides minor counseling to residents.
Works with the Port Huron Area School District teachers and full time child care staff as required in class instruction and supervision.
Administers emergency first aid when required, and upon direction from the Shift Supervisor, insures that medications or health treatments prescribed by qualified medical personnel are administered. Assists medical personnel during their visits to the Juvenile Center and accompanies residents when medical attention is required outside the facility.
Performs in house laundry duties.
Performs minor janitorial duties on days and shifts when the custodian is not at work
Performs substitute work for absent child care workers when needed.
In emergency situations, a Child Care Worker (floater or stand-by) is subject to transfer to any area or position to perform any duties which are required. |
