GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The supervisor is responsible for supervising resident detainees; for training, supervising and evaluating childcare workers; for organizing and supervising all aspects of the program; for assisting in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of childcare programs; and for the efficient operation of the St. Clair County Juvenile Center. |
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent and the Superintendent. |
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The Shift Supervisor must be capable of and is responsible for supervising the operation of the entire facility in the absence of the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent. |
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
An educational background in the behavioral sciences.
A background in residential childcare or Juvenile Court work.
Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of adolescent youth and delinquent behavior.
Must possess the supervisory talents necessary to direct the programs, staff and residents.
Skills in recreation leadership. |
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
At the time of the appointment, the Supervisor shall have one of the following:
A bachelor's degree (in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, and or guidance counseling are recommended);
- OR -
Two years (60 credits) of college and 2 years of work experience in a child caring facility.
The qualifications listed above are minimums. They are not absolutes, but general guidelines. |
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Is empowered to authorize admissions to detention during non-Court office hours in the absence of both the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent.
Supervises the childcare staff and receptionist
Plans, implements and supervises the program including a comprehensive recreation program.
Provides direct supervision of residents.
Insures that all residents are properly cared for and that proper discipline is maintained within the facility.
Insures that all medical needs of residents are promptly attended to and that all prescribed medical treatments are administered.
Is responsible for implementing the provisions of the Behavioral Modification Program.
Assists in the formulation and evaluation of childcare programs utilized in the facility and is responsible for supervising the implementation of such programs.
Is responsible for performing assigned counseling duties and writing observation reports on residents.
Supervises the intake and release of all youths being admitted into or released from the Juvenile Center.
Is responsible for supervising the visiting program in accordance with established procedures.
Insures the facility is maintained in a neat and orderly condition and that necessary custodial and repair work is referred to the custodial/maintenance staff.
Must approve all disciplinary room confinements exceeding three (3) hours and secures the approval of the Superintendent or the Assistant Superintendent before imposing a disciplinary room confinement in excess of twenty-four (24) hours.
Trains and evaluates childcare and receptionist staff.
Responsible to make meaningful recommendations of disciplinary action, including suspension and firing of employees to the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent for their consideration and enactment.
Responsible for conducting employee interviews and for making recommendations for hiring of employees to the Superintendent.
Provide training to the childcare and receptionist staff.
Conduct probationary period and annual evaluations of child care workers and receptionist.
Is responsible for completing and signing the time cards of all shift employees.
Prepares a daily written report containing all pertinent events occurring during the shift.
Briefs the relieving Supervisor about all pertinent events occurring during the shift and conducts key checks with both the corresponding Supervisors.
Performs substitute work when required.
When circumstances warrant, the Supervisor is subject to transfer to any area or position to perform any duties that are required.
Is responsible for performing any other duties required by the Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent and the Family Court Judge. |
