GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Senior Animal Control Officer assists the Director of Animal Control in the enforcement of Michigan statues, County ordinances and departmental policy and procedures. In addition, the incumbent conducts citizen complaint investigations, acts as a crew leader to subordinate staff, inspects kennels, prepares and maintains a variety of departmental records and reports. |
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Animal Control. |
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides general supervision to subordinate Animal Shelter employees. |
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Proven ability to use discretion and good judgment.
Proven ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Proven ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Proven experience and interest in animals and understanding of their proper treatment.
Thorough knowledge of relevant animal control laws, regulations and ordinances.
Good knowledge of animal diseases and ability to recognize symptoms of illness.
Proven ability to maintain records and prepare accurate reports.
Knowledge and skill in the use of a computer and Microsoft office software.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with animal owners, officials and the general public.
Physical strength and agility to pursue and take into custody stray animals.
Good moral character and good physical condition.
Reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations within the County.
Eligibility to qualify, carry and maintain a firearm in the performance of duties.
Eligible to be deputized to enforce State laws under act 339 P.A. 1919 as it relates to the humane law enforcement of animals. |
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree in Business, Law Enforcement or area related to the field of animal husbandry is required with a Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Three years of experience as an animal control officer or police officer required.
An additional four years of experience as an animal control officer or a police officer will substitute for an Associates Degree.
Certification as an animal control officer or a police officer is required. |
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Acts as the Crew Leader as directed by the Director.
Provide county-wide enforcement of all state statutes and county ordinances as relates to dogs and other animals Under Act 339 P.A. 1919.
Supervises the Investigation of claims resulting from damages caused by dogs to livestock and fowl.
Inspects kennels to assure they are maintained at an acceptable humane standard.
Supervises and directs the daily duties of subordinate staff.
Investigates citizens complaints related to the duty performance of animal control officers.
Recommends and may administer subordinate disciplinary action.
Reviews and completes unit reports as related to the operation of the department.
Assist in the scheduling of subordinate staff.
Attends meetings as required and/or in the absence of the Director.
Responsible for designated purchasing activity. |
