Title: LAW CLERK
Department: Circuit Court
Wage Range: $40,507   View compensation structure
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

The Law Clerk is responsible for conducting legal research and officiating in the courtroom and for performing related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the supervision of a Circuit Court Judge.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of court procedures and practices including the functions of the court related programs of the Prosecuting Attorney, Friend of the Court, Probation Department and other agencies
Ability to organize and prepare law briefs, opinions, analyses, reports and evaluations of all legal subjects.
Knowledge of legal reference materials.
Ability to advise judges through the evaluation and review of materials submitted.
Ability to analyze and interpret laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, legal opinions and decisions and to correlate this material with assigned legal problems and issues of an intricate and complicated nature.
Ability to deal effectively with attorneys, litigants and other members of the public with courtesy and tact.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain good inter-personal relationships.
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited law school.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Advises judges' as to exercise of constitutional and legal powers of their office, including the preparation of legal briefs, reports and draft opinions.
Aids in the coordination of office and court procedures as established by the Circuit Court Judge.
Evaluates and coordinates court and office schedules for the improvement of services, scheduling and procedures.
Obtains all materials and records necessary for performance of court business.
Provides judicial and jury security.
Maintains judicial library.
