GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provide countywide enforcement of all state statutes and county ordinances as relates to dogs and other animals. Responsible for the operation of the County Animal Control Department. |
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the supervision of the County Administrator/Controller. |
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision is exercised over all employees of the Animal Control Department. |
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Reasonable work experience which would indicate dependability, maturity and ability to exercise good judgment.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Must have the ability to communicate with and supervise the employees of the department.
Must have the interest in animals and the willingness to develop an understanding of animal care through formal training or otherwise, as provided.
Knowledge of the laws, regulations and ordinances as they relate to animal control.
Good knowledge of animal diseases and ability to recognize the symptoms of illness.
Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with animal owners, officials and the general public.
Good physical condition.
Must have a reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations within the County.
Must have knowledge in the operation of computers and programs that are being used (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, etc.).

AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or Criminal Justice is required. 5 years of experience as an Animal Control Officer will substitute for education.
Certification as an Animal Control Officer (100 hours of instruction as prescribed by the Department of Agriculture) or as a Police Officer is preferred. If certification has not been obtained prior to hire, on the job training will be provided. Candidate must complete all training and achieve certification as a condition of continued employment.
Certification as a euthanasia technician (8 hours of training by a certified Veterinarian) preferred.
Must have a valid State of Michigan driver's license.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Supervise all employees of the Department.
Make sure that all state laws, regulations, county ordinances are enforced properly.
Determine operating policies and procedures are developed and used.
Prepare a budget as related to the Animal Control Department operations.
Work with police departments, townships and cities and courts as related to animal control.
Make assignments to subordinates, advise them on difficult problems and review work accomplished.
Maintain records and prepare reports as required.
Perform related work as required.
