GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provide countywide enforcement of all state statutes and county ordinances as relates to dogs and other animals. Investigate claims resulting from damages caused by dogs to livestock and fowl.
Inspect kennels. Pick up and care for stray dogs. Euthanize animals. Does related work as required. |
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works is performed under the supervision of the Director of the Animal Control Department. |
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Is responsible for Supervision of the Animal Control Officer I. Is also responsible for the operation of the road patrol and enforcement of the department. |
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ability to use discretion, good judgment, understands and carries out oral and written instructions. Must have a valid Michigan driver's license.
Must have the ability to communicate with other employees of the department.
Must have the interest in animals and the willingness to develop an understanding of animal care through formal training or otherwise as provided. Knowledge of the laws, regulations and ordinances as relates to animals control.
Good knowledge of animal diseases and ability to recognize symptoms of illness.
Have the ability to maintain records and prepare accurate reports.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with animal owners, officials and the general public.
Good moral character and good physical condition.
Must have a reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations within the County. Must have knowledge in the operation of computers and programs that are being used, (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access Etc.) |
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of an associate's degree in criminal justice or is a certified police officer or has served at least 5 years as an animal control officer. Must be certified as an Animal Control Officer (100 hours of instruction as prescribed by the Department of Agriculture). Must be certified as a euthanasia technician (8 hours of training by a certified Veterinarian.) |
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
Respond to calls from the public regarding animal problems.
Patrol the county watching for stray, lost dogs and other animals.
Dispose of dead dogs and cats found on the streets.
Issue citations for violations of state statues and county ordinances.
Investigate animal bites to determine whether the animal has rabies.
Maintain records and prepare reports as required.
Assist in the maintenance of the animal shelter.
Euthanize animals as needed.
Perform related work as required. |
