Title: CUSTODIAN I & II
Department: Circuit Court - Juvenile Detention Center
Wage Range: Not Available
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Custodian is responsible for performing general custodial and various building and grounds maintenance tasks in the cleaning and care of public buildings and facilities and for performing related work as required.
The Custodian II performs the heavier or more responsible custodial work.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the supervision of a designated employee of higher grade.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Reasonable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in custodial and minor building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Some knowledge of accepted cleaning methods and materials and of the care of cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good physical condition and stamina.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Completion of at least the eighth school grade.
  • A Custodian II must have reasonable experience in performing a variety of building and grounds cleaning and maintenance activities.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (An employee in this classification may be called upon to perform the following tasks which are illustrative and not exhaustive in nature.)
  • Dust, sweep, mop, wax and polish furniture and floors.
  • Clean and maintain lavatories.
  • Arrange building facilities as required.
  • Wash windows, walls and woodwork.
  • Clean doors, desktops and other surfaces.
  • Gather and dispose of refuse.
  • Replace window glass and light bulbs.
  • Operate vacuum cleaners, polishers or other equipment and tools.
  • Move records, furniture and equipment as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks, including painting.
  • Count and inspect supplies.
  • Sweep sidewalks and keep free of ice and snow.
  • May raise and lower flag.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies.
  • Refill vending machines.
  • Mow and water lawn and perform some grounds maintenance work.
  • Perform related work as required.
