Hometown Security Week
September 9 - 15
Hometown Security Week recognizes the dedication of first responders, military personnel and emergency volunteers. This week is also dedicated to educating the residents of St. Clair County about personal preparedness for disaster situations. Local media, government offices, schools, and churches are asked to collaborate to distribute preparedness information and to become involved in activities that occur during the week including recognition of first responders and Hometown Security Day at Birchwood mall.
- Sunday – Hometown Heroes Recognition
- Thank the first responders, military personnel, and volunteers in your community.
- Monday – “ICE – In Case of Emergencies”
- Add “ICE” as a contact in your cell phone. Enter the name and phone number of the person you would like contacted in case of an emergency or disaster.
- Put an “ICE” card in your wallet or purse.
- Tuesday – Disaster/Emergency Kits
- Prepare a kit for the car and home.
- Check dates on non-perishable items if you already have a kit.
- Check/Change batteries in smoke detectors, flashlights and radios.
- Identify needs unique to family members.
- Have a disaster kit for family pets.
- Wednesday – Family Disaster Planning
- Design a family disaster plan.
- Ask about work and school disaster plans.
- Create, evaluate, or test escape plans.
- Create a communications plan.
- Help older and/or special needs family members prepare for an emergency/disaster.
- Register elderly or special needs family members to ensure quick and appropriate response during a disaster. Register online at:

- Thursday – Shelter In Place
- Designate interior rooms at home, work, and school as your safe rooms. For severe weather, find a room at the lowest level. For a hazardous materials spill, find a room above ground level.
- Friday – Public Safety Information
- Sign up for “SelectAlert,” a County notification system, by logging on to: www.stclaircounty.org/SelectAlert
- Register for the “Do1Thing”campaign to receive monthly emergency preparedness information. Click on this option when signing up for SelectAlert.
- Saturday – Hometown Security Day at Birchwood Mall
- Interact with emergency response agencies.
- Register your child in the “Kids For Safety” Program.
- Sign up to be an Emergency Management volunteer.
